The “Anatomy of a Case” is a foundational course at the Pre-Law Academy, serving as a crucial building block for our curriculum. The Anatomy of a Case class will be a two-day course and is designed to equip students with the fundamental knowledge and understanding necessary to navigate the complexities of our courses
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the 5 key elements of a legal case:
- Facts: The essential background information and events leading to the legal dispute.
- Issues: The legal questions that the court must answer.
- Provisions: Relevant laws, statutes, and constitutional provisions that apply to the case.
- Precedents: Previous court decisions that provide guidance on similar legal issues.
- Arguments: The legal arguments presented by both sides of the case.
- Identify the different parts of a legal opinion (majority, dissenting, concurring).
- Understand the concept of legal precedent and its importance in the legal system.
- Develop critical thinking and analytical skills necessary for legal reasoning.
