Unit Overview:

This unit will introduce students to the concept of torts, which are civil wrongs for which the law provides a remedy. Students will explore different types of torts, understand the legal principles involved, and analyze real-world scenarios.

Course Description:

This course will provide middle school students with a foundational understanding of tort law. Students will learn about different types of torts, such as negligence, intentional torts, and strict liability. Through engaging activities, case studies, and class discussions, students will develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of their rights and responsibilities in civil law.

Course Content:

• Introduction to Torts:
  • Defining torts and distinguishing them from crimes.
  • The purpose of tort law: compensation for injuries.
  • Types of torts: intentional torts, negligence, strict liability.
• Intentional Torts:
  • Assault, battery, defamation (libel and slander), false imprisonment.
  • Case study: Analyzing a hypothetical scenario involving an intentional tort.

Case Law Problems:

• Students will analyze real-world case studies (age-appropriate and simplified) involving torts, identifying the type of tort, analyzing the elements of the claim, and evaluating the potential outcomes.
• Case simulations: Students will role-play different roles in a mock trial, such as the plaintiff, the defendant, the attorney, and the judge.
